Another government job scheme slides into the red warning stage as only
4,649 jobs were created out of 54,000 jobs predicted for the Enterprise
Zones program.
It is easy for the media to paint the predictions of jobs as optimistic
but this falls into the framing of there being work available, when
clearly this shows there is not and it would be interesting to find out
how many of these new jobs were simply jobs made by the move to new
areas while replacing those in old sites.
Flagship government schemes designed to support business failed to get
money where it was needed while predictions for new jobs proved wildly
optimistic, according to a new inquiry.
The damning verdict was delivered by MPs on the cross-party Commons
Public Accounts Committee, which scrutinises public spending.
The MPs also said the number of new jobs created through Enterprise
Zones was “underwhelming”, with only 4,649 jobs created by the end of
2013, forcing the Government to admit that its original prediction of
creating 54,000 jobs by 2015 would not be met.
