Calls grow for Clegg to quit after another night of carnage for the Lib Dems: Cable tipped for top job as party battle to avoid being pushed into fifth place by the Greens


‘The Lib Dems were heading for a full-blown leadership crisis last night following the party’s latest disastrous set of election results.

The Deputy Prime Minister was braced for losing most of his MEPs in the European Parliament elections, following on from the loss of more than 300 council seats last week.

The party was even battling to avoid being pushed into a humiliating fifth place in the Euro polls by the Greens.

It meant that MPs broke cover for the first time to insist that Mr Clegg must go – with Vince Cable being tipped as his most likely successor. Describing Mr Clegg’s strategy as ‘a form of slow party suicide’, Lib Dem MP John Pugh said the local election defeats were ‘abysmal’ and were ‘mostly due to national unpopularity’.’
